🎣 HOW TO TIE THE RONNIE RIG
The Spinner Rig That Changed Carp Fishing Forever

⚡ What Is The Ronnie Rig?
The Ronnie Rig, also known as the Spinner Rig — is one of the most effective carp fishing rigs ever created. Developed by top UK carp angler Ron 'Ronnie' Buss, it became the go-to pop-up carp rig for anglers targeting big fish across the UK and Europe.
The genius of the Ronnie Rig lies in the hook rotating freely on a specialised spinner swivel, allowing it to flip and find a hook hold from virtually any angle. Paired with a balanced pop-up boilie fished just off the deck, it's devastatingly hard for carp to eject — making it one of the best carp rigs for pop-ups available.
“If it ain't broke, don't fix it — and the Ronnie Rig definitely ain't broke.”
✅ ESSENTIAL RONNIE RIG COMPONENTS
Before you start tying your Ronnie Rig, get everything laid out. Here's the complete Ronnie Rig components list:
- 🟤 Hook: Curve shank or wide gape — size 4 or 6 (used in the Atomic PRE-TIEDZ' Ronnie Rig)
- ⚫ Ronnie/Spinner Swivel: Specialised spinner swivel or quick-change swivel with ring removed
- 🔘 Shrink Tube or Kicker: Approx. 1cm — locks the hook to the swivel and sets the critical hook angle
- 🔵 Bait Attachment: Micro ring swivel or bait screw — for mounting your pop-up boilie
- ⚪ Hook Bead: Stops the bait attachment sliding off the hook shank — DON'T SKIP THIS!
- 🧵 Boom Material: Stiff fluorocarbon or coated braid, 5–9 inches

🛠️ HOW TO TIE A RONNIE RIG — STEP BY STEP
🔵 STEP 1 — Prepare The Hook Section
Slide a small piece of shrink tube (approx. 1cm) or a hook kicker onto the hook shank. Attach the eye of the hook to the crook of the Ronnie swivel — if using a quick-change swivel, open the crook slightly with pliers and squeeze shut once the hook is on. Slide the shrink tube down to cover the hook eye and swivel barrel, then steam carefully over a kettle to lock it in place. This sets the critical hook angle that makes the Ronnie Rig so effective at carp hook holds.
🔵 STEP 2 — Add The Bait Mounting Hardware
Slide your micro ring swivel or bait screw onto the hook shank, followed by a hook bead. Push the bead around the bend until it sits roughly opposite the barb. This bead is CRITICAL — without it, the bait attachment will slide straight off on the cast, ruining your carp rig presentation. The bait screw makes it easy to swap pop-up boilies quickly without retying.
🔵 STEP 3 — Build The Boom
Cut 7–8 inches of stiff fluorocarbon or coated braid boom material. Attach one end to the large ring of the Ronnie swivel — use a crimp for a neat, strong finish with stiff materials, or a Grinner knot for coated braids. At the other end, tie a figure-of-eight loop knot for quick connection to your lead clip or inline lead system. Always slide an anti-tangle sleeve on before finishing the loop to ensure tangle-free carp rig casting.
🔵 STEP 4 — Balance The Rig
Attach your chosen pop-up boilie to the bait screw or floss it onto the micro ring swivel. Pinch a small amount of tungsten rig putty around the shrink tube or swivel knot. Now test the rig in the margins — a perfectly balanced Ronnie Rig should sink slowly with the hook point facing down and the pop-up held just off the bottom. Adjust the tungsten putty until the balance is spot on.
⚠️ PRO TIP: Always check the hook is spinning freely on the spinner swivel after every cast. If it's not rotating, the Ronnie Rig won't work as intended and your carp hook-up rate will suffer.
