Atomic Jel-E-Wyre Soft Review – The Coated Hooklink That Actually Delivers

Atomic Jel-E-Wyre Soft Review – The Coated Hooklink That Actually Delivers

I'll be straight with you ,  I've been through more coated hooklinks than I care to admit. Some strip beautifully, some snap at the knot, and some sink like a dream but fish like a plank. So when I started using the Atomic Jel-E-Wyre Soft, I wasn't expecting to be particularly impressed. I was wrong.

First Impressions Out of the Packet

The first thing you notice is the coating, it's got this slightly translucent, almost waxy feel to it that's different from a lot of the competition. It doesn't feel plasticky or stiff, which is a good sign before you've even tied a knot. The braid inside is tight and dense, and you can tell straight away this isn't a budget product dressed up in fancy packaging.

I picked up the 25lb in Brown to start with, which at £9.00 for a spool is genuinely decent value when you consider how far it goes. I've been using it across a few sessions now on a local gravel pit and a day ticket water, and I've had time to really put it through its paces.

Stripping the Coating

This is where a lot of coated braids fall apart, literally. Either the coating tears unevenly, or it grips so tight you end up damaging the inner braid trying to get it off. The Jel-E-Wyre Soft strips cleanly and consistently. You can use your thumbnail or a proper stripping tool and it peels back in one smooth motion. No fraying, no mess. That matters when you're tying up rigs in the dark or in cold weather with numb fingers.

The stripped section is supple enough to give you a natural presentation, whether you're tying a Combi Rig, a Slip-D, or a simple D-rig, the hook moves freely and sits right. That's the whole point of a soft coated braid, and this one nails it.

Sinking Properties

One of the things Atomic make a big deal of is how well this stuff sinks, and they're not wrong. The Dyneema inner braid wrapped around a Kevlar core gives it a density that pulls it down fast and keeps it pinned to the lakebed. On the gravel pit I was fishing, the bottom is pretty clean, but on the day ticket water there's a fair bit of light weed and debris, the Jel-E-Wyre cut through it and sat flush without any issues.

If you've ever had a hooklink that lifts slightly in the water and spooks wary carp, you'll appreciate just how important this is. A rig that sits naturally is a rig that gets picked up.

Abrasion Resistance

Gravel pits are brutal on terminal tackle. Sharp stones, zebra mussels, rough gravel, it all takes its toll. I've had sessions where I've come home and the hooklink looks like it's been through a cheese grater. The Jel-E-Wyre Soft held up really well. After multiple casts and a couple of fish, the coating showed minimal wear and the inner braid was completely intact. I'd still change it after a fish as a matter of habit, but it's reassuring to know it's not going to fail you mid-fight.

Knot Strength

This is the one that surprised me most. A lot of coated braids crack or weaken at the knot, the coating bunches up and creates a weak point. The Fluron coating on the Jel-E-Wyre is designed to let knots bed down properly without breaking the coating, and it genuinely works. I've been tying knotless knots and palomar knots and haven't had a single failure. That's not something I can say about every coated braid I've used.

Colour Options

You get three colours, Brown, Green, and Silt Grey, which covers most lakebed scenarios. I've been using Brown on the gravel pit and it blends in perfectly. The Silt Grey would be my pick for silty or clay-bottomed venues, and the Green works well on weedy or grassy margins. It's a sensible range without overcomplicating things.

Breaking Strains

The 15lb (0.50mm) is ideal for clear water fishing where you want a finer diameter and a more subtle presentation. The 25lb (0.55mm) is my go-to, it's the sweet spot between strength and finesse. The 35lb (0.65mm) is there for snaggy or weedy venues where you need the extra insurance. All three are priced the same at £9.00, which is fair across the board.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes, without hesitation. The Atomic Jel-E-Wyre Soft does everything a coated hooklink should do,  it strips cleanly, sinks fast, resists abrasion, and knots reliably. It's not flashy, it doesn't come with a load of marketing hype, it just works. And in carp fishing, that's exactly what you want from your terminal tackle.

If you're looking for a coated braid that you can trust session after session, this is it. Pick up a spool of the Atomic Jel-E-Wyre Soft and see for yourself,  I'd be surprised if you go back to whatever you were using before.

Available in Brown, Green, and Silt Grey in 15lb, 25lb, and 35lb breaking strains. £9.00 per spool.
